The Strange Case of Perfume (the movie)
Marcia and I had put off going to see Perfume until last week, what with the holiday season and the recovery therefrom. It opened officially in the US in the first week of January, and ramped up to a total of 266 theaters in the second week. Imagine my surprise when I saw that it had dropped to only 86 last week, so I checked on times and we planned to drive to Seattle to the last theater it was playing at. When I went back to verify the schedule at 1 pm, I noticed that the last showing in the area was at 3 pm today. Alas, we were too late! Tomorrow it would be a thousand miles away in Laramie, Wyoming.
What happened to Perfume box office? Worldwide it grossed over $110 million; in the US it bombed out at under $2 million and is showing at only 60 theaters in its 5th week (after a peak of 288). I've checked review sites and overall it got mixed reviews, with a rating of 55% at Rotten Tomatoes, which keeps track of such things.
At least they covered their production costs of $60 million, but that happened in Germany, not in the US.
Was the movie really that bad? The web site is neat; the book was OK, but the marketing sucked (I never saw an ad for it on TV).
Anyway, at this point, I guess it probably gone from the Seattle area. I guess we'll have to wait for the DVD.
